I have a 96 Taurus automatic about 109,000. It was running fine until today. The car started making a very load humming sound from the front end, and will not shift into 4 gear. Also it will not go over 40 miles an hour. Transmission fluid is fine. Transmissions places say, master cyclinder is housed in the transmission case and that has gone bad 400-700 repair. The other shop says the tranny is gone 700 to 1200 repair. Where is the master cyclinder? the breaks are fine, however the gas pedel now is pushing your foot up when you push it down at around 35 MPH

You really need to get to a qualified shop quickly, well, as quickly as
you can at under 40 M.P.H. The fewer miles you drive it the better.
The master cylinder theory is bogus. The fact that you added the gas
pedal pressure problem suggests that perhaps the sub-frame holding the
engine/tranny has broken a bolt or two and fallen. This can jamb the
linkages, causing shifting and accelerator symptoms. Ford had a huge
recall on this problem on early Taurus and Sable vehicles. Google that
to learn more.

My 96 taurus with 127000 mi would not shift into 4th and it was found
to be a clip broke on the shift solenoid. had to replace the whole
valve body with a rebuilt.
