Hello Tom,
It's been many years since I worked on any cars but the last one I did an
ATF filter change on was a 1972 Dodge Coronet Wagon with the 318 engine.
Can't remember the tranny it had though. Come to think of it, the car would
run in reverse but would not engage in any forward gears.
We changed the filter, gasket, etc. and the car engaged in forward and
reverse gears. Originally the car was my dad's family car and it was handed
down to my brother as a "work car". I can't remember how many miles were on
it when we did this maintenance but I remember my brother driving it for
years after that. .
So Tom, being that this guy's Taurus is not engaging in /any/ gear, you
are most likely correct in your assumption of more damage than just a dirty
filter. I appreciate your extra input.

Had the tranny been kept up through the years I would say change the
filter and fuild, sounds like hard failure to me also. If I had nothing
to do with money I would try the filter and oil change. I would look at
the "manual" shift linkage as a possible problem. Electronic. Sounds
bad and don't take one from a Junk yard...

Can you say forward clutch piston? Common on early taurus.
