is it worth it to get a transmission flush on a 1992 van (302) overdrive
trans ?
someone recomended that to me with a conditioner added.
i have a small vibration or rumble or something when i get up to arround 25
mph on a moderate to hard acceleration. checked the universals (1 piece
drive shaft) and the rear and axels and they seem fine.the tires seem fine
too.
thanks.

I think you need to find out where the problem is before trying random
things like transmission flushes.

Why don't you just drain it?  It has a plug in the
converter.  Between draining the converter and removing the
pan to replace the filter, you will probably get damn near
all the old fluid out instead of having some of the old
fluid mixed in.  Just pull the plug from the bottom of the
bell housing and rotate the engine by hand until the 1/8"
pipe plug with the 7/16" head is exposed to drain it.

The vibration you feel may very well be what is commonly
called converter shudder.  There are additives out there
that work well to help cure or control the shudder.  One is
called Shudderfix.  It is usually available at transmission
parts houses.  NAPA and other well stocked parts outlets may
also have it.  If your trans is an AODE or 4R70W, you should
consider replacing the converter solenoid while you have the
pan off with the later modified version to lock the
converter quicker thus avoiding shudder.  This is an easy
replacement.  Just make sure you do not overtighten it when
you install the new on.  Those valve bodies cqn be very
sensitive to screws and bolts being too tight.  It basically
just need to be snug.  If you have a low range torque
wrench, you need about 100 in/lb. or so.  This is about as
tight as most folks can get with a screw driver.

Experience has taught me................

That transmission can be removed, rebuilt, installed, with a warranty
for around $1200.

Flushing trannies with moderate to high mileage, often, not always, but
often turn a bad situation into an even worse situtation.  This is also
the
case on low mileage units.

A transmission flush runs between $75 to $125, depending on the place
doing the service.  This money would be better off applied to future
tranny
repairs.  (look at it as a discount coupon)

U-joints should ALWAYS be checked with the driveshaft removed.

Most vibrations and related noises are not the tranny.  The tranny
usually
exhibits other symptoms before reaching this point.

Total BS.
Change the fluid regularly for maximum automatic transmission life.
Fluid is the lifeblood of the tranny.

This may well be true, but if it is NOT the tranny, you want to change
the fluid anyway to PREVENT tranny trouble.

Your postulating that fluid changes on automatic transmissions are a
waste of money IS pure, unadulterated B.S., and I'll say it to your
face.

I comprehend exactly what you are saying - and it is STILL B.S.

Tranny tech? Sure, like AAMCO and all the other Tranny specialists
that would rather sell you a rebuild than properly maintain a tranny.,
or is it the other kind of "tranny" since you seam to have gender
related issues.

my experience with the trans in the 94 van with 302 was that at around
35-40k miles the converter shudder would start. so by doing a trans fluid
and filter service every 35k miles, there was no shudder, or it was just
starting.  the van had 365k miles on it when sold last year, and now has
435k miles on it with the original trans, and the original motor with 3k
mile oil changes

Now you are backtracking. When I said changing the fluid was a good
idea, and that your saying it was not was B.S, you got all bent out of
shape because you thought you were dealing with a girl?

Now all of a sudden it's a good idea?

Which is it??

Although it's too late for this now but I was reading an article about
replacing the transmission fluids as soon as possible after break-in
and it's logical when it's posible so many issues could potentially be
avoided.

Ford Vans had a problem with something called Transmission shudder. I had 94
big E350 with 351 engine I believe and the c-6 trans  that had the shudder
problem. The fix is buying the inexpensive part and intalling it in just a
few minutes. The Shop did mine but said the fix was simple.

Your '94 350 had an E4OD if it had a shudder.  C6 was 3
speed non lock trans thus, no converter shudder possible.
The E4OD did/does have shudder problems from time to time.
The AOD(E)/4R70W was not used behind the 351 engine.
