its a cable release. and on the fuel door itself there is a metal strip that
is there that i think is out of place cause when i go to close the door i
have to push that thing back in or it hits the car

Then that (the latch-plate, usually with or also acts as a spring)is your
problem... ask to look at someone else's similar car, to see how it's
supposed to be configured.

And.. while we are sympathetic... it would have been nice if you had said
that in the first place, rather just saying "it's broke" and blowing up
at someone making a non-derisive remark. look at it again... you said
"it's broke", he gave you what response he could, given the little info
YOU supplied
Evidently you spend no time on 'net forums... we'll help you out like
family would.. but we'll also, like family, sometimes be pissy just to
get your reaction.
Noone here is getting paid for this... and the info, being from multiple
sources; many with actual experience on same problems, others with same
credentials as the 'experts' on ad supported sites... means you usually
get a much more in-depth answer -collectively- than you would there.
Now... you have your answer on how to fix it- given what we know, and
you've inspired NO ONE with the same car to go out and give you the
definitive step-by-step instructions; so if that isnt good enough for you
then piss off.
If you'll bother to look and tell us how those little tabs that are
apparently loose are fastened to the fuel door, then we might have some
other ideas.
Hint: Salvage yard.

BY THE WAY...
if you figure out for yourself how to replace/fix it, have someone operate
the release, while you watch the little plunger ... to make sure it works
and you dont have to pry the fuel door out again to make it open

The metal strip should be the "spring" that helps pop the door open
when you pull the cable. Most of it attaches to the door, with one end
(rubber tipped?) pressing against the edge of the "hole" (when the door's
closed) and bending, like standing on the end of a diving board.

I think everybody is just glad that you fixed it yourself. You will be
more ready to tackle the next problem, which is just around the bend.
May I also suggest that you change or flush your transmission as the
model you have is notorious for failure. I must add that some fear
changing old fluid and prefer prayer as a prophylactic.
