I have a 05 Colorado. Dealer told me that when I engage the starter the
noise I hear Is normal.

The noise is like the starter is not connecting with the flywheel. It's the
sound of when one would engage the starter when the motor is running. Dealer
told me its Imposable to hear that noise because the starter will not engage
once the engine has started. True, It will not do it once its running. But
it does it when it's being started in the AM.

What is the cause of this ?

Sure sounds like misalignment of the starter drive gear to the flywheel
when cold.  With all the metals cold it may not fit/mesh correctly; then
after they heat up & expand, they mesh more quietly.  They should fit such
that it is quiet at both temperatures.  s

Forgot to say: it should be fixed asap, as it most likely will worsen
with age and improper wear.  That being a new design, assuming it's the
5-cylinder engine, it could be an industry-wide, design problem.
Nonetheless, it is definitely not normal.  s

Why not have the dealer start a similar truck on his lot to see if it makes
the same sound?  If not, it's not normal.  If it does, it might be normal,
or might be that one is defective too.

My '05 Collie also used to make a bit of a funny noise when starting,
at first.  Either it's gone away, or I got used to it - in any event,
the truck has 38K miles on it, with no problems.
