Thinking about buying an '88 Cavalier Z-24 with that digital
dashboard, which the owner says doesn't work properly, but it's possible
just the speed doesn't register while the other gauges do.
Does this necessitate replacing that entire gauge cluster, or is there
a module which controls it and prone to burning out, etc.?  If so, what
is the cost of buying those parts?  TIA

Sorry James - can't be answered by your description.  It could be a lot of
things.  No one can really suggest what may be wrong or any other such
advice when you're not even sure yourself what the failure symptoms are.

A friend of mine had an '89 Cavalier with the digital dash. It was a huge
pain in the a.s. The speedometer worked fine, a few of the other gauges
worked fine, but the tach didn't work at all. You should find out exactly
what part of the dash isn't working. You can always try a junk yard dash, if
you can find one, but keep in mind they were not very common.
