Quote from the article.
TOKYO - Toyota Motor Corp. is quickening its quest to unseat ailing rival
General Motors Corp. as the world's biggest automaker and widen its lead
over Ford Motor Co. with reported plans to boost overseas production by 40
percent to 5 million vehicles by 2008 and blueprints for higher output in
North America.

If you think this is "new" you are naive.  Toyota has been on this quest for
about 40 years or so.  They are very patient.

Do you think Japan has been on revenge mode since the 2nd World War and that
Toyota, among others, serves as a way to inflict to the US a severe blow to
its economy?

I don't know if revenge is the right word, but yes, they have become very
important economically and continue to grow stronger.  China may take away
some of their thunder, as will Korea, still running behind.  Just look back
in history at all the great powers of the world. The US is not invincible,
especially as we continue to allow so much of our manufacturing to go
overseas and foreign investors to own so much property and so many of our
important businesses.  Oil, supermarkets, real estate is  going to be
controlled from overseas.

What happened to the Turkish, Roman, Great Britain empires?

I think they the Japanese are every bit as clever and ambitious (perhaps
greedy will fit in this slot as well)
as American industrialists.  I dont think they particularly want to destroy
our economy, for to do so
would be to destroy the largest consumer market in the world.

They dont, however, want a piece of the pie...they want the most of the pie.

Unfortunately for GM, Ford and Chrysler all Toyota has to do is more of
the same.
