2003 Chevy Tracker fuel mileage dropping drastically !

I have a 2003 Chevy Tracker, with a Suzuki 4 cylinder, 2.0L engine. Up
until the last couple of months, I would easily get 600 KMs to a tank
of fuel, but now only get 300 KMs to a tank of fuel. My mileage has
dropped by half.

I have replaced my spark plugs, changed the fuel filtre, replaced air
filtre. Doing this made no difference what so ever in improving or
restoring my fuel mileage.

After some thought, I have come to the conclusion that my timing belt
may need replacing and reset. I have not started on this process yet,
but am not sure if I have a timing chain or timing belt.

I have notived that when the engine is idling, the RPMs are only at
about 700RPM, where I think it normally would be around 1,100. So this
is making me think the timing chain or belt may be the issue.

Has anyone else experienced a problem similiar to this? Does this
engine has a timing chain, or timing belt?

I look forward to your experiences and thought on this.
Thanks!

Better stick to bashing GM, I don't think your mechanical
knowledge is going to help here.

If you don't know what it has, how can you arrive a the conclusion that your
timing belt may need replacement?  I think you're off base here.

Bad logic.

Have you had anyone scan the engine yet?  I'd look at the O2 sensor(s).  I'd
see if the car is running in open loop all the time - which would account
for such a drop in mileage.

If you just start throwing parts at your car you'll certainly end up with a
bunch of expensive new parts that do nothing to fix your problem.  Take it
to a garage for them to scan and work from the data that develops.

Thanks for the information. How would I tell if it is running in "open
loop"?

Scan it.

LKO,
I want to underscore the wisdom of Mike's post.

You can throw expensive parts at a car and NEVER fix the problem...At the
very
least, it is an expensive approach.

If you dont trust the mechanics or garages that are available to you, I
suggest you
take a course, buy a service manual, get a code scanner, etc and get to the
place
that you can diagnose and repair the most of the problems yourself.

Good post, Mike

Well, I took in my Tracker today to the Chev Dealership and they ran a
scan, no errors came up on the scan. So, now I am not sure how to
proceed. Anu other suggestions?
Thanks
