Randall Stephens - 26 Mar 2004 15:20 GMT Just got the call. The seal is cheap, but they have to pull the trans to replace it. Cost is over $500. Is that reasonable. I know how to fix the little things, but I don't think I could pull the trans on my 12.99 Rhino Ramps from AutoZone.

Jeff Tamblyn - 27 Mar 2004 01:18 GMT at least get 2 more estimates. I'll bet an indy shop will charge a lot less.
Mista Bone - 27 Mar 2004 01:34 GMT Thatis a fair price.
I charge $200 labor to R&R a tranny, another $50 labor to change the clutch. Then figure another hour to change the rear main seal.
I'm not a shop either, just a backyard mechanic that does alot of Honda Civic manual transmissions.
I'm "D" tranny guru.

My '91 Integra has 223K on the original clutch. Second gear synchro is getting weak, and I have to keep the revs at 4K or below when shifting into 2nd, otherwise the lever hangs up. And I will NOT force it into gear.
I figure when the clutch finally goes, I'll get the tranny rebuilt at the same time, as I'm sure the bearings won't last forever.
However, NOBODY will quote me a price for rebuilding the tranny. They ALL say "well it depends...".
The tranny has always had the lube changed every year with originally 10W- 30, and later with Honda's own MTL.
I have always double-clutched when downshifting.
All the other gears shift fine. No unusual noises or behavior (this confirmed by my Japanese mechanic).
At bare minimum, the 2nd gear synchro assembly and all the bearings need to be changed. And probably at least one shift fork.
What would *you* say would be an "average" cost to rebuild this tranny?
I'd just kinda like some sort of ballpark so I know what to expect.

Randall Stevens - 27 Mar 2004 07:53 GMT I went to pick up my car from the Honda dealer. Everything looked good. So i decided to go through the free carwash at the dealer everything was going fine Then I went to pull out into traffic. I was just easing out into the road when my trans was gone The engine revved uncontrolably and I coasted to a stop 15 feet from the driveway in the middle of the road i had lost all of my gears! no forward or reverse I had to get out and push it off the road I could hear it spinning and it made a pleasant TWANG sound when i tried to shift gears So i had to call the service desk 15 minutes before they closed he told me that the guy will not be back in until monday at noon so they gave me a rental camry for the weekend What do you think they screwed up when they took off the tranny to replace the rear main seal? What type of compensation should i ask for? I am pretty upset about the whole thing

Your compensation should be your car fixed back to the condition it was before they got their mits on it.
Chip Stein - 27 Mar 2004 23:14 GMT > snip > >What type of compensation should i ask [quoted text clipped - 8 lines] > Your compensation should be your car fixed back to the condition it was > before they got their mits on it. most likely one of the axles pulled out. if one pops out of the tranny it won't move. Chip
Mista Bone - 28 Mar 2004 01:21 GMT Axle popped out of the diff, wasn't fully seated. Tell dealership you want a FREE rental while they order a NEW axle from Honda parts.
Not a reman, a NEW axle.
When the axle pops out it damages the splines, sometimes damages the diff. inside the tranny.

Also with 90-93 Teg trannys, the synchro is fine, but the dog teeth are worn.
Ball park figure, $500-600 if you remove the tranny.

Thanks.
And how many hours to remove and replace the tranny?

Mista Bone - 29 Mar 2004 09:44 GMT book rate states 6 hours, my fastest to date is 2:14 on a 96 del Sol.

I have determined that a new clutch and tranny rebuild, with all the taxes in, is likely to cost me in the neighborhood of $1,500 US ($2,000 Canadian), assuming my guy does it all for me.

I know how to fix the >little things, but I don't think I could pull the trans on my 12.99 Rhino >Ramps from AutoZone. Who told you this? This is a favorite dealer $$ generator. Is the leak bad, i.e. do you have to add fresh oil to keep the level up and how often, mileage-wise? If it's very minor a change to one of the extended life engine oils, like Valvoline MaxLife might help swell the seal enough to stop the leak.
If you have to have the work done, then it'd be worth considering whether you want to have anything else done, which might come due anyway, while the transmision is off, like clutch or torque converter overhaul.

Randall Stephens - 29 Mar 2004 15:20 GMT the leak was pretty bad. It went from a few drops to large puddles every time I stopped. It was up to about a quart every two weeks

Randall Stephens - 30 Mar 2004 18:13 GMT UPDATE I went to pick up my car and the antennae was broken. ( he had it fixed for me) I asked to speak with the service manager and told him about the problem. this wasn't the first thing they screwed up either. A few months ago they forgot to put the dipstick back in after an oil change and when we got a new muffler on my car the tailpipe was smashed. For my trouble he took $250 off the bill

Big Bertha Thing toga
What's a First Aid Tent? What's a toga party, in "Animal House" by National Lampoon? In "Mean Machine" starring Burt Reynolds, he said "If it worked once, it should work twice. Lets do it!" With the First Aid Tent, it worked twice, so it should work three times. The first two battles of cyberspace each started, when a first aid tent was set up. The first was set up on the OUSA Classical Particle conference. The second was set up on four conferences, in the pseudo Student Research Faculty. Needless to say both the conference and the faculty were subsequently closed down by order. "It's a tale to gladden the ears and to grow old listening to," said the giant in the "Chronicles of Thomas Covenant." by Stephen Donaldson.

The Twelve Days of Christmas
December 18th May the green holly-tree flourish, striking its roots deep into our English ground, and having its germinating qualities carried by the birds of Heaven all over the world! The Holly Tree December 19th Seasonable tokens are about.... Lavish profusion in the shops; particularly in the articles of currants, raisins, spices, candied peel, and miost sugar. Edwin Drood December 20th Christmas was close at hand, in all his bluff and hearty honesty; it was the season of hospitality, merriment, and open heartedness. The Pickwick Papers December 21st And numerous indeed are the hearts to which Christmas brings a brief season of happiness and enjoyment.... How many old recollections, and how many dormant sympathies, does Christmas time awaken. The Pickwick Papers December 22nd It is good to be children sometimes, and never better than at Christmas, when its mighty Founder was a child Himself. A Christmas Carol December 23rd Christmas time! That man must be a misanthrope indeed in whose breast something like a jovial feeling is not roused-, in whose mind some pleasant associations are not awakened- by the reccurence of Christmas. Sketches by Boz December 24th I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach. A Christmas Carol December 25th A Christmas family party! We know nothing in nature more delightful! There seems a magic in the very name of Christmas.... Would that Christmas lasted the whole year through! Sketches by Boz December 26th Let the benignant figure of my childhood stand unchanged! In every cheerful image and suggestion that the season brings, may the bright star that rested above the poor roof, be the star of all the Christian world. A Christmas Tree December 27th Another Christmas come, another year gone!... More figures in the lengthening sum of recollection that we work and work at to our torment, till death idly jumbles all together, and rules all out. The Haunted Man December 28th The windows of the house of Memory and the windows of the house of Mercy are not so easily closed as windows of glass and wood. They fly open unexpectedly; they rattle in the night. Somebody's Luggage December 29th Who seeks to turn him (Time) back, or stay him on his course, arrests a mighty engine, which will strike the meddler dead, and be the fiercer and the wilder, ever, for its momentary check! The Chimes
