My brother just bought a 2003 Civic with rear end damage. The air bags
didn't blow but, apparently, there is something that blows in the front seat
belts? I have never heard of this! Now, I guess the SRS computer has to be
reset. Problem: he can't get the car registered until the seat belts are
functional and he can't get the computer reset unless it's in the car and
everything is installed. He is replacing the seat belts but, the body shop
is not equipped to reset the computer. Does this make sense? Can you have
the computer reset without it being installed in the car? It doesn't seem to
make sense to have to tow the vehicle to a dealer or a shop that is
equippped to do the reset. Are there any more logical options? Is somebody
just pulling my pisser on this?
Your insight would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Stephen

Seat belt pretensioners. Explosive devices to take the slack out of the
seat belt at the time of a collision. Disposal instructions include the
caution that one should be 30 feet away from the vehicle before firing them
with the deployment tool. It is also noted that the deployment is highly
audible. Front and rear tensioners in my 2003 Civic Hybrid, along with
front and side airbags. I'd make sure they are all complete. There are
stories of empty airbag compartments discovered after the next accident.
The service manual suggests that the SRS should reset itself after the
device(s) are replaced.

So what's the prob, driving an unregistered car? In California you can get
a one day registration to drive your car to the shop to get a smog test or
safety certification. I would assume the same allowance exists in Canada.

This should answer your question...
NOTE: Before doing any SRS repairs, use the HDS SRS menu method to check for
DTCs; refer to the DTC Troubleshooting Index for the less obvious deployed parts
(seat belt tensioners, front sensor, side airbag sensors, etc.).
After a collision where the seat belt tensioners deployed, replace these items:
Seat belt tensioners
Seat belt buckle tentioners
SRS unit
Front impact sensors
After a collision where the front airbag(s) deployed, replace these items:
SRS unit
Deployed airbag(s)
Seat belt tensioners
Seat belt buckle tensioners
Front impact sensors
After a collision where the side airbag(s) deployed, replace these items:
SRS unit
Deployed side airbag(s)
Side impact sensor(s) for side(s) deployed
During the repair process, inspect these areas:
Inspect all the SRS wire harnesses. Replace, don't repair, any damaged
harnesses.
Inspect the cable reel for heat damage. If there is any damage, replace the
cable reel.
After the vehicle is completely repaired, turn the ignition switch ON (II). If
the SRS indicator comes on for about 6 seconds and then goes off, the SRS airbag
system is OK. If the indicator does not function properly, use the HDS SRS Menu
Method to read the DTC. If this doesn't retrieve any codes, use the Tester's SCS
menu method. If you still cannot retrieve a code, go to SRS Indicator Circuit
Troubleshooting.

TomP - 02 Oct 2004 23:51 GMT
'01; also side SRS with OPDS, was and still is an
