I purchased a 2005 Honda Odyssey EX/L.  The head unit in the vehicle has the
"xm ready" logo on it, but I can't find any information about an xm direct
connector, nor does honda list anything at their website except for an xm
upgrade/head unit for the non ex vehicles.  Can I add the terk tuner and
have it integrate with the factory head unit?  Is there an XM direct adapter
available for the terk?  Honda america, the dealer don't seem to have a
clue.  Any help appreciated.

My 2003 Civic says "Sirius Ready" on it.  They changed to XM in 2005?

Oops, wrong car, that wasn't my Civic that said that.

http://www.odyclub.com is the best place for this question.

Go to this site for more info.  I have a 2005 Odyessey Touring and I
have a similar problem.  I'm not interested in XM but rather an AUX
input for my 40Gb MP3 player.  Hope this helps you.

They charge $100 for it.  The most I've ever paid for the same device is
$50.

That device is $99 because it allows control of certain devices, like Sony
CD and in-dash MiniDisc players.  If you have an MP3 player that it doesn't
control, you are wasting money.

The folks at P.I.E support are very helpful for the Aux adapters.
They indicated that the 2005 Accord was covered by their adapter in a
thread here a week or two ago.

This device plugs in as a "cassette player". This gives you no control, but
does give audio input.  It is cheaper than the PC-SON, at $49.95.

At http://www.installer.com/aux/  the device lists for $69.95.

If you feel that using the device with a MP3 player is a waste of
money then please tell me how you would get the MP3 player to output
through the van's audio system.  I would expect to control the player
at the player - I just want the audio through the van system.

The PC-SON offers control of some devices, but you don't have one of those
devices.  All you want is audio conversion.  The price you are posting now
is less than the one on the web page that you posted last time by $40, so
that brings it closer, but
http://www.logjamelectronics.com/piehon98aux.html does audio for $49.95

The site that you listed last week has some errors.
The page for the AUX98 is uses descriptive text that is identical to the
PC-SON, including the picture.  It isn't easy to recognize the feature
difference that explains the $50 difference.

The problem with the $49.95 device is, and I'm quoting from the web
site you referenced
(http://www.logjamelectronics.com/piehon98aux.html ) :

"The HON98-AUX is NOT compatible the vehicles with navigation systems
or with vehicles that have the in-dash 6-disc factory CD changer."
I do not have NAV or the RES but I do  have the in-dash 6 disc OEM
changer.

Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

You didn't say that you had the external CD changer.

Maybe I misunderstood the phrase "no-external-changer" in the URL that you
posted initially.

I don't see any qualifier for the PC-SON on that page that says that it
will work with the Honda external changer, although it is noted on the
logjam site.

I don't have an external changer (not really sure what that is).  I
have a stock 2005 Odyssey Touring.  It comes standard with a 6 cd
changer built-in from the factory.

The HON-AUX isn't compatible with the in-dash 6 disc changers that they
put into the Accords up through 02 for the simple reason that that unit
does not have a CD changer input port.

That same unit would have been used in the 99-04 Odyssey model.

The Accord changed starting in 03, and the Odyssey in 05.  I don't know
if that warning has the same meaning or not.

I'm extremely happy with the cassette adapter that I'm using with my XM
radio.

One problem is that most Hondas don't have cassette players.
Another problem is that the cassette adapter seems to offer pretty poor
sound quality.  The cassette adapter also has some moving parts that make
an annoying amount of noise.

Yeah, well, go figure.  I don't know if the XM signal is designed with
the assumption that you're using the cassette adapter or what, but in my
Lexus with a good sound system, XM radio sounds a lot better than I ever
hoped it could.

I wouldn't bet against the cassette adapter itself, in my opinion.
Maybe the cassette receiver is a problem, but not the adapter.

> I wouldn't bet against the cassette adapter itself, in my opinion.

I don't see why they should be a problem.  You ought to be able to induce
magnetics that are equal to or superiror than the oxide sliding by in a
real cassette.  But that doesn't seem to be the case.  In my Dodge, it just
has a little high pitched noise that I don't hear when playing an actual
cassette.  In my son's Volkswagen with their Monsoon sound system, the high
pitched noise is quite annoying.  I thought it might be doing a Dolby
decode on a non-Dolby source, which would brighten the highs, but it seems
to be an extra noise, not associated with the music per se.

The other thing is that in order to work with auto-reversing decks, there
is some moving widget in the adpater which rattles and scrapes annoyingly.

In the VW, that didn't work, and the deck would reverse every once in a
while, less than a minute.

I also have a Belkin FM transmitter.  When the music is quiet, the radio is
not.  There is always hash.  Blekin TuneCast Mobile FM Transmitter

Only Odysseys with TourPKG, Navi and RES have "factory installed" XM radio.  You
can get a Honda accessory XM unit for a price, for other models, except LX.
XM radio is not an option for the LX trim level, go figure.

No Lawsuit Ever Fixed A Moron...
Mo@nospam.net - 17 Oct 2004 04:39 GMT
After researching this issue a bit more, there is not currently an
aftermarket, non oem xm tuner that integrates with the head unit.  Honda
america sells an xm tuner upgrade that fully integrates with the head unit,
so you can utilze the steering wheel controls for changing stations and
volume controls.  This unit is available at numerous internet honda
accessories dealer for about 425 bucks including all the necessary cables/
adapters and antenna.  That said, I believe the head unit utilizes the "open
bus standard" of xm direct, but there is not currently an aftermarket
adapter similar to the ones terk sells for bmw/ mini/ gm products, but I
anticipate that there will be.  These units offer substantial savings over
the one from honda.  The big disadvantage in the oem units is their lack of
portability between vehicles.  As much as I like the idea of an integrated
unit, I'm leaning towards the roady for its portability.

Who manufactures the head unit on the new hondas?..  The design does not
encourage a swap, that's for certain.  Does anyone know for certain if it
uses the xm direct open bus standard?

Thanks for all the replies on this question.
