I am wondering what kind of transmission fluid to use as a replacement on
an 87 Prelude SI with a manual transmission. I got the car to work on the
clutch and have since taken out the transmission. I haven't been able to
find out easily online what sort of replacement fluid to use or if it
matter what type.  Thanks.

Honda sells a special MT Oil, but the manual just calls for motor oil
- 10W30 or 10W40.  AFAIK, this applies to all Honda MTs from 1971
through at least 1994.  I don't know if it still applies to new
Hondas.  Anybody?

We put regular 10W30 into my girlfriends trannie in her
87 prelude.  Works fine.  I am located in cold canada, and
it doesn't seem to stiffen up at all in winter either.

Typically 10W-30 motor oil.
However, motor oils have changed since 1987. i think they now have less
phosphorus & zinc, which are anti wear additives.
IF I were doing it, I'd get 1 or 2 qts. of the Honda MTL and top off the
rest with regular 10W-30.
