I am currently shopping for a minivan (used) in the 10-15K price range
(Cdn.). I currently have an offer on a 2001 Mazda MPV LX. The Mazda
has 76K kms. on it and I have offered $10K plus my 95 Accord for it
(has 170K kms.). My local Mazda dealership accepted the offer, but I
have yet to sign. I still feel that I would rather have an Odyssey.
The problem is they retain so much value.
Currently in my area (Ottawa, Canada) there are two Odysseys listed
that meet my price range, but the mileage is very high. There is a
2000 Odyssey EX with 193K kms. (asking $12,500) and a 2000 Odyssey LX
with 126K kms. (asking $15,995). The second is not too bad, but just
a bit too expensive unless I can talk the dealership down a few
thousand to match my MPV deal.
My question is: how many kilometers can one really expect one of these
vans to last? Should a van with almost 200K kms. be worth almost
thirteen thousand dollars? Would it make sense to go with either of
these vans, or am I investing too much in the Honda name? Would the
MPV be a better deal?
Thanks
Bruce

The value of odyssey doesn't drop off the chart much. I know a
(Edmonton) guy with over 400,000 Km on his 2000, and he still got about
$8,000CAN for it. It's a whole different world from the 'disposable' Dog
Caravan :-)
