boobie - 09 Nov 2005 03:12 GMT I have been wondering about VTEC engagement....
Judging by the manner the "majority" of people (in the US) drive and narrowing down to Honda owners....
I am pretty sure most Honda owners either very, very rarely or NEVER hit VTEC, I mean especially owners with A/T,..I really think most NEVER ever hit VTEC.
I mean I think most people just never rev that high (5~6 K) to get into VTEC...
don't you think ?

>I mean I think most people just never rev that high (5~6 K) to get into >VTEC... With those little engines, you're going to hit it all the time when you need the power. Example: drive west of denver into the mountains. The engine will lose speed in top gear and bog down; put it in third and it'll just buzz merily along at 5-6K. The power is there when you need it, if a bit noisy.

otoh, when i drive my buddy's accord ex [auto], that thing goes vtec in 1st and stays there until you're well illegal. it all depends on the driver.

While I just recently got a car with VTEC, I've been waiting for the opportunity to really take it out after break-in. I don't doubt that it will be engaged a lot. ;)

I hit it all the time when I drive the van, and I rarely drive the van...
when I had the 92 Civic Si, I was into to every time I drove the car.

I do not know about 5-6K, mine feels like i can engage around 4-4.5 k under right conditions
need it especially on highway here, everyone thinks they are racing somewhere and their goal in life is not to let you get in front of them, which is fine (just slip behind right) except there is another guy right behind that one with the same notion and the on-rampers get same treatment ? where VTEC is handy
i just wish i had that 1.6 DOHC 160hp monster in the civic, watch the jaws drop on those un-suspecting passer-bys
Jamco - 09 Nov 2005 16:43 GMT lol, kinda funny your calling the 160HP a monster, and yet if you read the RSX forums, the people with the base RSX (160HP Engine, and no true vtec) are considered SLOW
>> > I have been wondering about VTEC engagement.... >> > [quoted text clipped - 32 lines] > i just wish i had that 1.6 DOHC 160hp monster in the civic, watch the jaws > drop on those un-suspecting passer-bys robm - 09 Nov 2005 17:10 GMT well relatively speaking 160 is a monster, i am about 120 hp w/vtec and i find it fun to drive so 160 hp ought to give quite a nice kick in the pants giving more fun (i would hope)
160hp RSX slow ? i think it is more relativity at work there, whats the comparison 220/240/260 hp
now that would be monster in a civic

"It'll reverse your thinking." ;-) I personally would love to have one.

P.S. Imagine what that engine would do with a cold-air intake, hi-performance exhaust system, new cam gear, turbo, etc. ;-)

Thats exactly why i try NOT to keep up with latest cars, I'll want one. maybe i can go look and not touch, doubtful

Jamco - 10 Nov 2005 01:05 GMT yup, its basically a poor mans RSX...to bad they made it butt ugly :(

The 2006 Civic SI is faster than the RSX-S.
If you want to know how it would do with those mods, go to clubrsx.com. Some guys are with the Cybernation Turbo and running 12's. A CAI/RH/Exhaust/Hondata should easily get it in the high 13's.

GingerGSR - 11 Oct 2006 14:39 GMT I have a 96 Ex Coupe with a JDM B18C that is from a Honda Integra SiR in Japan. It put out 180 HP from the factory. I've added a CAI, a Type-R header, 2.5" exaust and high flow cat and muffler and it now puts out around 200 HP. It is a treat to drive. Pulls hard through all gears without any bogging. 0- 60 in 5 sec. 60-80 in 3sec. Monster? No, but a couple BMW's are missing their doors.

> lol, kinda funny your calling the 160HP a monster, and yet if you read the > RSX forums, the people with the base RSX (160HP Engine, and no true vtec) > are considered SLOW haha exactly I have TSX (2.4 DOHC i-VTEC) and it IS a rather "slow" car **BUT** can be driven fast ! You just gotta rev the hell out of it and yes, that engine begs for it.
Last car was good-ol' M/T Legend...VTEC all teh time, now the A/T TSX I got goes into VTEC @ 6K So unless I use the sportshift I've never been able to hit VTEC :(
chris - 09 Nov 2005 21:14 GMT My 2000 civic SiR (US Si) acts like a regular civic under 5500rpms. Once vtec engages it's noticable, but I wouldn't call it a MONSTER.

My Prelude runs along @4200 rpm at 80 -- VTEC comes on around 5300 rpm. I normally shift around 5,000 but will frequently run up to 6000 -- which is well short of the redline at 7400. In other words, I probably run into the VTEC range several time a day and certainly when I am accelerating to get on the freeway where the traffic moves at 75-85.
Pars - 15 Nov 2005 02:22 GMT If I had a VTEC in my DX engine, I'd be hitting it at just about every stop light. Even so, I'm not hurting, since my DX engine has yet to be beaten by the SOHC VTEC. (However, I have been spanked by the DOHC version).
