Regardless of how good or not the stock all-seasons are, get dedicated
winter tires on a separate set of steel rims.

An *excellent* alternative would be to get the Nokian WR tires.

They're the only all-season tires with the snowflake on them, and they
come from the company known for snow tires.  In addition, they don't
seem to be a compromise at all; killer in the snow, and quiet and smooth
in the summer.

The only problem, for some, is that they are blasphemously expensive.

I bought 4 of them, with tire warranty, installed, for $500 last year.

What's so expensive about that?

That's all?  Oh!

Of course, everything here in Canada costs more than in the U.S., although
the WR's apparently cost significantly more than other tires.  I've heard
of people here paying upwards $150 per tire compared to $100 for a decent
all-season or winter tire.

HI,

The  Michelin X-Ice snow tires I got last year were $155ish Cdn each.
195/55/R15 (2000 Civic SiR(USA Si)   I think I paid $1000Cdn ish for 4 tires
and steel rims last year.  My wife got an excellent deal for her 05 Civic
Si.  $800ish for X-Ice and steelies.

OK, I guess I should have mentioned that the approximate prices I gave
were for the 185/70-14 size (which my Accord uses), just to use an
example.  Obviously, a different size will have a different price.

You get what you pay for.

You want a "decent" tire, one you can legitimately call a new tire, you
pay $100.  You want a GOOD tire that does what you need it to do, you
pay a buck fifty.

So?

Are you one of those who know the price of everything and the value of
nothing?

I put on a set of Pirelli Winter Carving snows last year and downsized
from what I had on an Accord EX V6 as the regular allseasons. $95 per
tire plus rims and tax. Good deal and they worked just fine. Nothing
exoteric and good value.
