honda transmission

My 2001 honda civic ex was having problems with the transmission.  Turns
out there was no fluid in the car and the gears were slipping.  As I
stopped it started to knock.  What is the general price that includes
labor and (possible new transmission)parts for the car?

Way too little info provided. Please answer the 5-W's. The WHY has gotta
be the best one in this case . . .
What's the mileage, and please be sure to say whether it was the tranny
(automatic?) that was out of fluid, or the engine, or both.

sorry about that.  106,000 miles at the time of the problem.  had a major
tune-up at 90,000 miles. All other fluids were normal.  Maybe a leak, but
don't know yet.  Yes it is a automatic.  just trying to see how much it
will cost if I replace the tranny.

Where's it leaking from? The thing holds about 12 quarts of fluid . . It
has to show up somewhere, unless you park it at a different spot every
night. The difference between a FULL dipstick and an EMPTY dipstick is
only about 1/2 quart, so you might not be in any trouble at all.

Rather than looking at replacing it, why not get it properly diagnosed?
Have you read the owner's manual about how to test the fluid level, and
what to look for (smell, color)? Has anybody ever put fluid into it for
you (ie: non-Honda)?

Have you asked your Honda dealer to look at it yet? They have a scanner
that can tell them if there's any serious tranny problems and they can
do a proper drain-n-fill for you with Honda fluid. If somebody has put
another brand of fluid in there, it usually shifts HARD, like the slam
of a door. That fluid needs to be removed, by the way. Was it shifting
hard before the mysterious 'problem'? What is the 'problem'?

not shifting hard at all, just not going forward as if the gears were
slipping.  Only honda service at 90,000 miles.  We are going to take it to
a dealer on Monday.  When I checked it there was no fluid at all.  Put in 4
quarts and still kept slipping.  Just wanted to see how much it will cost
if worst comes to worst.

4 quarts? that's not possible unless the torque converter was pumped
dry.  if that's the case, you have a /serious/ leak which would be all
over your driveway.

When you drain and refill the tranny (without removing the cooling lines) it
only takes something like 2.5 quarts in the tranny.
