Wrong. It'll happen in any gear. Hard starting the car will do it.
Pulling away with clutch fully let out, full throttle and the car only seems
to be crawling? Thats it. Dropping from top to 3rd to pull away faster and
although the engine redlines the car hardly accellerates, that'll prob be
clutch slip too. To say it will only happen in the 'correct' gear is simply
wrong. Put simply an increase in revs should lead to a corresponding
increase in speed, If it doesn't then either your tyres are smoking or the
clutch is!
Some people test the clutch by putting the parking brake on, putting car in
2nd gear and slowly let the clutch out, car should stall easily. If engine
seems to hang in there then it's because there's not much meat left on the
clutch plate.

First, it has to work correctly in the correct gear before the clutch is
ruled out as bad. For example, you're stuck in fifth gear or loose clutch
fluid pressure in an auto then there will be little or no movement of the
car. Also if you're stuck in first gear or sometimes stuck in really low
gear then there will be little movement of the car even though the clutch
is 100% fine. Yes, it can slip in any gear but the clutch should slip at
the normal gear before it's diagnose as bad on autos. Some autos
are really quite and don't have an rpm indicator, so it can be
somewhat confusing.
Sounds like we were confused with the OP lack of info. He didn't
mention manual or auto which displays different symptoms.

although there are clutch packs in an automatic tranny, if someone asks
how to tell if their clutch is slipping, i assume theyre driving a manual.
