In another thread - an individual paid a dealer a $500 deposit. Why in
the world would you do that? It just locks you into that dealer.
There are tons of cars out there.
While trying to negotiate with a slimy honda dealer in Mpls - ran into
a young guy who had been talked into putting down a $500 deposit - he
then figured out how the dealer had screwed him - the only way out was
to give up the $500.
IMHO if a dealer asks for a $500 deposit - it is time to come out with
some choice expletives.
Can anyone give a good reason for giving a stealer a deposit?

I wouldn't like to pay it either. But if they are ordering a car for you, or
having it shipped in from somewhere else, they are adding a vehicle to their
inventory that they probably don't need or want. They are just asking for a
commitment from you that you are not going to turn your back on them once
the car is in their inventory.

Good point - that never occured to me. I always buy with cash - never
had anyone to question whether I would back out of a deal - but if the
dealer has a car shipped in and the buyer backs out - can see where
they would loose a few bucks.

If you are getting certain options that are not very popular that need to be
special ordered, there is a good reason to request a deposit.

The deposit is refundable.

I ordered a car from a dealer and was onyl required to give a 100 dollar
deposit. I got a good price on the car so I wasn't too worried, but I DID
put it on my credit card, so if anything ddi go wrong, at least I had some
recourse with my CC company.
