1992 Accord exhaust system replacement costs

I'm not a car person, so I've been trying to browse the newsgroup, but
I don't get everything that's going on. I'm trying to get an idea for
how much I should expect to pay, and what really needs to be replaced
on my car.

The exhaust pipe, between the muffler and resonator, is corroded and
broken in two places (about 1" and 2-3' upstream of the muffler). The
muffler was replaced two years ago, but the shop told me that the
connection is too rusted to be reliably clamped to (so I should replace
the muffler, too). They also pointed to the joints immediately
surrounding the resonator as being rusted/corroded, and suggested
pre-emptively replacing that as well.

1) I clearly need to replace the pipe, but do I need to replace the
rest?
2) How much should this run me?

They gave me the following estimate:
Extension pipe $30
Resonator assembly $135
Quiet-flow muffler $155
Labor $68

>From what I've gathered, the muffler looks over-priced. Am I right?

What about the rest?

First off, be sure to get Honda OEM parts as from what everyone has
posted in the past, they tend to last a bit longer than the aftermarket parts.
From the looks of the prices it appears to be the case. You should be able to
salvage the muffler provided that it is intact and not rotted out. Ask you
mechanic to show on the muffler why you need to replace the muffler.
Was the muffler that you had replaced 2 years ago a Honda OEM muffler,
if so then the replacement is free of charge.

Sounds like where my 91 Civic's corroded a few years ago.
The pipe there was called "Exhaust Pipe B," IIRC.

That happens. Often one can hold the muffler at the
appropriate end, try to shake it, and the "play" is quite
evident, indicating the muffler needs replacement. Or you'll
see exhaust coming out.

Get under there and confirm!

I am inclined to think an OEM muffler is worth it, but only
from general reading here. I have used aftermarket mufflers
for around ten years now on my 91 Civic. Um, like four of
them...
