The sterling specific parts are hard to get, but they shared many parts
with the Acura Legend, so those parts should not be hard to get.

He isn't doing his homework. Sterlings have Honda/Acura drivetrains, so any
competent Honda/Acura mechanic should be able to work on his car.

That could be. Maybe it is a great car for someone that has experience
with them, but not a good car for the general public.
He's not competent to work on cars so takes it to the mechanic - he is
one of those guys that goes there when the car is practically falling
apart.
His last mechanic refused to work on it - he said that the parts were
just too difficult to cross. I recommended a mechanic that works on
everything and is very competent - he also wasn't interested.
I am reluctant to look over his shoulder too much, for fear that he
asks me to do his engine work -- don't' need yet another job.
A while back he needed a new radiator overflow tank and could not find
one. Honda dealers did not sell it and junk yards did not have it. It
could be that the tank crosses to a Honda number, but the local dealers
are certainly not aware of that.
Last time he drove it, he was refused service at Jiffy Lube to get his
oil changed - they said they didn't have the filter. Personally, I
found that last one almost hard to believe. Of course, those guys are
not mechanics but does go to show you that they are much harder to
maintain than regular cars (like Honda, etc).
I would not get one for that reason. I like to walk into a part store
and know that they'll have it.
He's at this point looking to practically give the car away, I think. A
shame, because it does look like a nice car.

try electrical work on one sometime. all the wires are gray, with
little numbers on them. not a fun time. I would send them all to the
smasher myself

Now that you mention it, I did notice that the wiring was all one color
(black, I think).
Just figured figured they were just very neat about it and brought the
jacket insulation right up to the connectors.
Wow - that's even worse than I thought..

This is true. But they most likely won't; I sure wouldn't work on a
Sterling.
