We have a 2000 Odyssey that we bought used. It got a new set of tires in
the 20-25k mile range, and I attributed that to however the original owner
might have treated the car. At 51k miles, it needed MORE new tires, and I
paid a lot more money than I'd ever paid before, just to get tires that
would have a longer tread life.
Now I've got 81k miles on the van and two of THOSE tires (Toyos, selected
for long tread life above any other consideration, and they cost me about
$130 apiece) are down to 3/32" of tread, in need of near immediate
replacement. The other two tires are fine.
We have the dealer do regular service on the car and the tires are of
course rotated. I'd like to know why I'm burning throgh tires in less than
30k miles per set (much faster degradation than with any other vehicle I've
owned).
More importantly, what are a decent set of tires, that ride okay and are
safe, but will give me longer tread life on this vehicle than I've
experienced thus far?

Are the tires evenly worn? Do you check the pressure regularly and when the
tires are cold? You also have to remember that the vehicle may well be much
heavier than previous cars you've owned and handles extremely well for a
van. That would wear the tires.

The tires in question were in the front. Wearing evenly. Brake pads are
checked/replaced according to normal schedule. Only oddity with the van is
the tire wear.
What's considered "normal" for tread life for tires for an Odyssey?

How often were they rotated - if only your front tires are worn out -
you are not rotating enough - minimum of every 10K miles. How many
front brake pads have you replaced - normal can mean 20K or 100K.

I put a pair of Michelin Harmony's on my 2000 at 35K and they still
look new 59K. They get rotated every 5K with a later pair of the same.
In fact, I can't tell which pair is which and there is 10K difference
in mileage. The key is rotation, rotation, rotation. My tire dealer
strongly suggested the 5K rotation and he does it for free for his
customers. They are a small privately owned, tires only, no frills
shop with a huge following. It's a pleasure to do business with these
people.
