Suddenly had the "check gas cap" appear on my 2006 Ridgeline dash. Been
several days since I had filled up, so am confused as to why this
popped up. Redid the cap but message remains. My manual states that it
may take "3 days of normal driving before the message goes away." Any
ideas what's going on here? Thanks.

The emission control computer sensed that the cap wasn't sealing properly,
and that gas vapors might escape from the filler neck. The light won't turn
off until the computer is certain the leak's gone. It needs to run its
normal diagnostics a few times until it's convinced.
Next time you fill up, forget the "three click" thing they tell you. Make
sure the cap is tightened AT LEAST six clicks. More is even better.
This is all mandated by US Federal EPA.

It took my Civic more like 5-7 days for the light to clear.

tegger is absolutly right forget the 3 click thing and turn 6 clicks next time but say tegger being he has an obd2 second generation onboard diagnostics computer. im thinking he might wanna try disconnecting battery cables for 5 minutes and put them back just to see if that helps to turn off gas light. now that the gas cap is tight ? i know on the older obd1 computers it would of reset the computer. and check engine light would go out and stay out if the problem was repaired
