Taller 5th Gear on '87 CRX Si?

I've had an '87 CRX Si for 9 years. Is there any practical way to get a
taller 5th gear?

I generally shift into 5th at around 40-45 mph, and by about 60mph it's
up to around 3,000rpm. In some places on the highway, just keeping up
with traffic at 75-80mph is closer to 4,000rpm. With gas prices where
they are, I'd sure like a taller 5th gear.

Thanks,

Greg

trade in for a CRX HF? did that one use a higher 5th gear? maybe a
tranny from that model?

unless you can research it and do the work yourself, its not going to be
worth it

People believe that taller gears will automatically produce better fuel
economy.  This is false.  The best fuel economy is generally realized at
about 80% of the rpm at which peak power is reached.  If you put too tall
gears in the vehicle, and use them, you can actually realize poorer economy
than you have now.

That said, it does seem that your vehicle is geared low, compared to my 1999
Civic HX, for example.  This is no doubt so that the CRX Si will realize
greater performance as measured by acceleration.  I imagine that the best
way to get what you want, is to transplant a transaxle from a more mundane
model, such as a Civic.  I don't know that this will fit, but recycling
yards' parts interchange manuals may be able to help.
