I bought myself an Ipod today and I'm trying to figure out what to get to
hook it up to my CRV. Has anyone done this? Did a harness do the job? or did
you have to buy the fancy shmancy adapter kit?

thx.

Go to Wal-Mart or Best Buy and get an "FM transmitter" for $50. It plugs
into your cigarette lighter socket and the iPod plugs into that through its
USB port. No modifications needed of any kind to the car. You'll find this
with the iPod accessories. Ours is made by Belkin.

The hardest part is finding a radio station that's not occupied, so the
signal will carry without interference (and that's not actually hard...).
The instructions that come with the transmitter will explain this part.

My wife has her 30GB iPod hooked up this way and she absolutely loves it.
It plays through the car's radio and speakers.

We find that you do have to wait a few seconds while the transmitter and
the iPod talk to each other before the music starts to flow, so be patient.

Thanks for the quick reply, but I'm not after an FM unit. I would prefer the
cable hookup and I'm getting conflicting info when I'm googling.
Some sites say you have to use 2 adapters to work, one for the ipod and
another for the hookup to the radio.
Others suggest a unit from best buy that may work.
All solutions are around 200 bucks US.
I have the 6 cd changer in my CRV.

"Cable hookup"? Please describe.

The cd unit has a plug to control a cd changer or satellite radio. You can
hook up an adapter to the plug and plug in an Ipod adapter such as this one.

You'll probably have to copy and paste the link.

The sound quality is much better through a setup such as this. I was trying
to see if I could get a unit for a few bucks less than this, but I may be
S.O.L. on this one.

Yeah I like this route, I think controls via the headunit are not so
important and really like the idea of having an accessible stereo input.  I
switch between a sat. radio receiver and a non-ipod mp3 player (of which I
use the unit's interface to control)  and just pipe in whatever to the
stereo, sans fm transmission.  When your pals come ride with their own
devices, they just plug in and life is great!

circuit city sells a version identical to this for $60. their version
has (2!) sets of RCA jacks, and can be accessed on the head unit by
pressing the CD/tape button.

comes up as CD 1_1 and CD 1_2

Some folks with the control integration aren't overly happy with it.  It
strikes me as just one more interface to learn.  I already know how to
control my MP3 player, and I don't make changes to it while I'm driving.

My 2003 Honda Civic has a single-cd in dash head unit.
It has a connector on the back that could go to an optional CD Changer or
tape deck.  I have plugged a P.I.E converter into that jack.  The P.I.E has
RCA inputs, and my MP3 player appears as "CD-1, Track 1" on the head unit.
I toggle between CD player and MP3 player with the CD button on the head
unit.

I didn't have to remove the radio.  There's a flat 14 pin connector, on the
back of the radio, so it was easy enough to reach up behind the radio and
plug the connector in.

external changer? or internal?
Phat Phuq - 08 Jun 2006 11:40 GMT
Internal 6 disk unit.
I can add an optional disk changer as well.

Here is a picture of what the unit looks like. This one is in a 2002, but
mine is similar.

I've heard conflicting stories about the software being changed for the
05/06 models of audio systems, so I'm leery about shelling out cash for
something that may not work or worse yet, blow the system.

My CRV is a 2006, so this may not be the same, but generally, there seem to
be two approaches for wiring an iPod to a CRV's factory stereo.

1. Adaptors that hook into the antenna input.  Conceptually like the FM
transmitter approach, but should work a lot better.

2. Adaptors that hook up to the CD changer input.  I don't know if these
work with the built-in CD changer like you have, or just with the stereos
that do not have a changer built-in but rather can control an external
changer.

Note that while solution #2 lets you control the iPod from the stereo, the
control is limited.  Basically, you've just got the controls of the changer,
and you might be limited to controlling six playlists (basically, it acts
like the six playlists are six CDs).

As far as I've been able to tell, the best way to add an iPod to a CRV, if
an FM transmitter is not good enough, is to replace the factory stereo with
one that has an AUX input, and then you can simply hook up the iPod with a
cheap cable.  You won't get to control the iPod from the stereo, and if you
want to charge the iPod while in the car, you'll need a power adaptor.

the "fancy schmancy" kit to interface it with the factory stereo is as
low as $60 at circuit city.

best buy wants double that.
Phat Phuq - 08 Jun 2006 11:41 GMT
I'm going to check that out.
thx.

Honda offers an ipod link as an accessory part for the '05-'06 CR-V.  You
might want to price it from a couple of dealers before you indulge in some
aftermarket hack.

If you're referring to this link, I think I'm out of luck. It only applies
to the 2006 model year. I checked with my dealer on that one too.

I found a place that may have a unit that works with my model year.

Unfortunately, more expensive than the factory one (if it worked) and around
my pain per dollar threshold. But I may have to go this route.

Check out Scosche's offering of iPod accessories including their new
ipod Bluetooth interface for your car or home - it won iLounge's Best
of Show at MacWorld this year. They also have RF remotes and a full
line of standard accessories.

The crutchfield link in the forum looks promising, but they are temporarily
/ indefinetly out of stock and I can't find any reference to whether or not
they ship to Canada.

I have found a site that is promising as well and although it's a little
more expensive, I'm going to roll the dice on them.

Follow up to my original.
Decided to go with a fancy shmancy unit, hard wired, made by these guys
here...
