Cannot get the cylinder to compress on the rear caliper. Any ideas?

It doesn't compress.  It screws in.  Either carefully use a large flat head
drive, or get the proper tool.  I use the square multi-drive attachment they
carry at carquest for $12.  Figure out which side matches your car and use
it on the end of a ratchet and extension bar.
