Have you had your V-6 auto transmission replaced?

I just had the automatic transmission in my 2001 Accord LX-V6 replaced
under warranty. I'm at 90k miles, so I have only 10,000 more miles to
go before I'm playing Russian roulette with the replacement
transmission.

I'm curious for real life experiences or scuttlebutt on how long these
replacement transmissions are lasting and how many fail again.

I'm thinking that it's time to prepare to dump this car even though
otherwise it's in excellent shape. Don't want to face the very real
possibility of another replacement at my expense . . .

I'm at 162,000 miles on the original transmission on my '01 EX-V6.

Mine was replaced at 15K mi. on 99 Accord EX-VL.  New transmission has
similar issue (surging while trying to maintain speed), but not nearly as
noticable.  I'm at 82K mi. now and it's not getting worse - we'll see how
long it lasts.

The surging prob mentioned.  What exactly is it?  Could it be the GLS
system being faulty?

Maybe you guys could comment on your driving style.  I have a
suspicion that these transmissions may hold up for a long while if
you're gentle, but they don't take well to aggressive driving.

Actually, my transmission for the first 150,000 was driven pretty
aggressively, although almost exclusively highway.  It is only recently (due
to A) too many tickets in a short period and B) heavy use of cruise control
due mainly to a back injury) that I've calmed down.  The increase in gas
mileage I suspect will keep me calm for a good many years.

I don't think that is true. I subscribe to the Jackie Stewart school
of driving which says that a passenger who is blindfolded should not
be able to tell when you transition from one state to another when you
are driving - i.e., they should not be able to tell when you start to
accelerate, decelerate, or begin turning or going around a curve, etc.
I doubt there are many who drive more gently than I do. I rarely
forced a downshift in my car and I never floored the accelerator . . .
but I lost a transmission . . .  :(

The service manager at my dealer (large metropolitan area) told me he
has two guys who do nothing but replace transmissions all day . . .

If service schedule does not require changing a-t-f filter, then gear
box lacks a filter ( like Mitsubishi's ), so a-t-f cannot stay clean.
www.aa1car.com/library/2002/bf90222.htm para 12
1 can [i] use a syringe & hose to suck ( via dipstick's hole ) a few cc
fr bottom of sump & see. [ii] fit a filter ( e.g. Mazda 323's petrol
filter ) onto the joint ( betw metal pipe & rubber hose ) of a-t-f 's
exit cooling pipe.
My F20A's present gearbox was slightly noisy when in "neutral",
until its a-t-f was cleaned by the filter I fitted.  A lack of a filter (
= a design flaw ) made its predecessor's lock up clutch jam.

Got my 98 V6 with 81k highway miles on it (150 per day).  Now I'm up to
almost 205k and it's high time for a new one.  Probably 1/2 of my
ownership miles 125k were on pizza delivery.  Bangs jerky into 2nd.  OD
has an ultrlight buzz in it (for 100k).  At cruising speeds I get the
light surge and jumping in/out of OD.  Now in 3rd (randomly this past
week) when slightly loaded the thing slips and catches and almost
breaks your neck while it hunts.  I've milked it for probably an extra
30k over what anyone else would get just by "knowing" what it likes and
how to play around the weak spots.  Tedious at best, though.  I
consider myself very very lucky considering the pizza delivery part.
Pretty unbelievable, actually.

In my '00 Accord V6, the torque converter was replaced at 33,000 miles
which didn't help the constant surging at cruising speeds. Then, the
transmission was replaced at about 37,000 miles because the transmission
started to jerk in and out of gear. The constant stuttering has continued
to this day (77,000 miles) and I'm putting up with it mostly because I'm
afraid that something else will get screwed up trying to fix it. Yes, I've
had things go bad on previous fix attempts; not to mention, the down time
(inconvenience) while the car was in the shop.

'99 Accord LX V6. Replaced tranny at 77,000 miles. Transmission had been
serviced every 30,000 miles. Honda paid for the replacement transmission but
I had to pay the labor.

2000 Acura TL new tranny at 86,000. No cost to me. This is a VERY common
problem with the Acura V6 and there is an extended warrantee.

I just received a notice of a class action suit against Honda that includes
Honda Accord 2000-2001 (not 99) the settlement further extends the warrantee
to 109,000 miles or 93 months. If  I were you I'd bitch about paying a cent
for your transmission replacement. Contact Honda of America.

That's not at all encouraging. But at least you have another 23k miles
to go under the extended warranty.

It is upsetting. Bought this car prior to retiring because I thought it
would be dependable and the wife and I could do some limited traveling.
Unfortunately, I no longer have much confidence in it (or their dealers). I
don't think Honda has a permanent fix for the problem. We've revised our
retirement plans accordingly and will probably have to buy another car. So
much for the best laid plans. :-(

Uhhhm..... unfortanatly Honda has had some  problems with ther
automatic trannys =(  thats why i tend to lean more toward 5-6 speed stick manuals when purchasing one. much more reliable because of less parts = less chance of something breaking down would you not agree?

1995 Civic 224,000kms on "Original Clutch"  Still good before trade in

You do the math
