My 94 Accord has all of 52,000 miles on it, and it's about time to
get a front-end brake job.
I can save a few bucks having the job done at a local shop, and
they've told me they can use genuine Honda pads if I want. I don't
know what money difference is involved, but wonder what you guys
think about how important the Honda pads would be performance-wise.
In the past, it seems that the brakes worked fine, but squealed,
when I tried to save a buck on the pads. But actually, on my 94 the
brakes have always squealed a bit - well, at least on the first
application of brakes, but not so much after that.

Honda OEM pads do not cost significantly more than high
quality aftermarket pads. From my reading, they are made for
Honda brake rotors and so will yield less dust and noise and
likely less wear on the rotors.
I recommend purchasing them from www.slhonda.com or
www.hondaautomotiveparts.com .
Elle
Original owner, 91 Civic, always changed the brake pads
myself. Returning to OEM pads at next change after two sets
of aftermarket pads and a lot of reading over the years on
this. "High quality" aftermarkets are not terrible, just not
worth the few dollars one might save.

I agree. After using a set of Autozone brake pads that were teribly
'dirty'
I went back to Honda OEM pads and will stay with them.
Likewise the OEM headlight bulbs. The first set of Honda OEM bulbs
lasted 4 years before one burned out. I changed to Sylvania
after-market bulbs and they went out in a year. Now I'm back with Honda
bulbs.

Use the Honda-brand hardware. Period.
This is the voice of experience talking.

OEM only. Forget aftermarket.

Honda uses different batches at different times. Some are Nissin, which
have excellent stopping power; some are NBK, which IMO are not very
good. These tend to glaze and fade more easily than other pads. Honda
also uses some European based brand, TMD, on the Civics, they may be
working into the Accords but I am not sure.
These OEM ones do vary in quality but certainly don't cost more than
the Akebono ProAct ceramic pads which I prefer.
www.akebonobrakes.com
Ceramic pads are very quiet. They shouldn't squeal even when new. If
any mechanic worked on the brakes and then they squeal, it tell you a
lot about the mechanic. Just make sure the hardware is properly cleaned
and lubed. The brake fluid should also be flushed every two years.

use honda oem. i've tried a bunch of others over the years and honda's
oem spec cause less disk wear, less squeal and most important of all,
less fade. and they're not significantly different in cost.

First set of replacement pads at 90K were Autozone - they squeaked a
bit on occasion and only lasted 65K or so - third set was OEM - you
also get all the other little goodies in OEM - the metal plates. Have
over 200K on my rear brake shoes now - wonder when if ever they will
have to be replaced?

Not all OEM brake pad sets come with the little goodies. Some are pads
only.
