Replace the thermostat. With a dealer one.
Change the coolant while you're at it, not neglecting to turn on the heater
and remove the block drain. And use dealer antifreeze.

Honda service manager just called and said the rad was toast due to
leaking at the bottom and all the other problems were related.
does that sound right to anyone?

It certainly could be right. For one thing, this group has
many reports of Honda radiator failures for a Honda this
old. For another, the loss of coolant would mean certain
engine control sensors are not being properly cooled etc.
and so are not operating correctly to control things like
engine idle.
You can google the two Usenet Honda groups for info on
action to take to replace a radiator. Repairs (in lieu of
replacement) are generally not recommended for someone in
need of a reliable car and not doing the work him/herself.
