Yesterday morning I had a very hard time shifting gears. Only shifting
to reverse made a grinding noise. The other gear shifts were very hard
but they do no make any bad noise.

After speaking with a friend, I checked the clutch fluid level and
it was way down. Looked like empty. I bought the recommended DOT3
brake fluid and added it in. There after I tried shifting and it worked
without problems. This was last night at 8:30 p.m.

However this morning when I tried to put the car in reverse it started
making the terrible grinding noise (it did that yesterday also) as you
would expect if the clutch is not pressed while shifting. I could not
shift to reverse.

Then I tried shifting to 1st gear and it just won't go there. Same with
the 2nd, 3rd etc. It just won't shift. There is no noise however.

I noticed the clutch goes down half way doing nothing and is very soft the
rest of the way down.  However I checked the clutch fluid level and it
looks fine.

At this point I am not even trying to drive the care. What do I need to
do?

========================================

Get the clutch line bled. The clutch should have been bled when the
brakes were last done. If it's been that long (read your manual), get
the brakes done too.

Is this something I can do? How much
does it cost to get this done professionally?

Turned out to be a master cylinder leak. Thanks to my friend Eli, he
replaced the master cylinder, and bled the clutch line and all is well.
