My abs light comes on and stays on at different times. When the car
is cold, the light does not stay on.WHen I then stop the car for any
reason and start it again, the ABS light stays on. The regular brakes
seem to work well and I hear no other irregular sounds (though I am
very hard of hearing)

You will need to retrieve the error code from the abs system.
Refer to tegger's site for instructions on how to retrieve it and
report back.

I don't have much in the FAQ for ABS, so looking there won't help you.
Having said that, the ABS computer is seeing somethig wrong and so turns on
the warning light.
You need to retrieve the numeric code behind the light.
That's done by shorting the Service Check connector, turning the ignition
to "II", then counting the blinks from the ABS light.
Chances are pretty good you've got a damaged or rusted pickup and gear at
the road wheels.
