Can the alternator in an 87 Accord be replaced in the same way as in
an 85?

(I have seen messages that say on the 85 the drive shaft has to be
removed, but I have pulled the alternator out to the right of the
carburetor, and I wonder whether this is also possible on an 87 - I am
asking because I haven't yet worked on it.)

You can't just replace the brushes kit like other models?

I have pulled the alternator out from above on the 87. The directions
on the service manual didn't consider this shortcuts.
