Yesterday, I bought a 1992 Honda Civic EX for my daughter.  I test
drove the car and everything appeared fine.  I also test drove several
others.  I talked to the previous owner and looked at previous repair
records on this vehicle.  Any way, today I returned with my daughter
to sign papers and pick up the car.  I had the dealer change the oil,
water pump and the timing belt as the car has 116,000 miles on it.  I
asked the dealer when signing papers if he had driven the car and if
he felt the brakes needed anything done to them and he replied "no".
Tonight after my daughter drove the car home, I took it for a test
drive and noticed after driving a short distance the ABS light comes
on and stays on.  I checked on the internet about ABS problems and
heard the "horror" stories about the expense to repair these.  I feel
that I have been somewhat ripped off by a used car dealer, but maybe I
am overly concerned about the ABS problem.  Please advise me as to
what I should do???  My daughter already owes me big time for the car
and the work I have had done on it.  Thanks for any and all help.
Dana

Anybody have any idea as to what the ABS problem is (there is no
blinking taking place, it stays on solid?)

You should learn to properly cross-post, and then check a.a.h. for
responses...

It could be the ABS pump but more likely a wheel sensor.Been there
done that.

However the car will stop just fine when the ABS is out . she just has
to learn to drive like we did 60 years ago when there was no ABS to
fall back on . The brakes will work normally just fine without ABS
(Been there done that)

Here in Ontario a wheel sensor is around $300.00 Canadian installed.
Hope thios helps

FWIW, I had the ABS light come on in a Dodge Caravan. Seems with the
MOPAR system, a weak battery can cause the light to come on due to a
"low voltage at sensor" code. Replaced the battery, and no more ABS
light.

Same issue with BMW motorcycles.

Why wouldn't you take the car back to the dealer immediately? There
must be some sort of warranty if you bought it from a reputable
dealer?

ABS systems were problematic on those old Hondas.  It might be a wheel
sensor or wiring problem that is economically repairable, but it also might
not be.  If the unit itself is bad, replacement parts prices will probably
come close to what you paid for the car. The main brakes are unaffected when
the ABS fails. Most people don't fix it.  In that time frame, it was an
option, not standard equipment.

I think you have two (reasonable) options:

1. As Joe L suggested, check the applicability of your state's lemon laws,
you might get lucky; or,

2. Ignore it (but first get the braking system fully checked out to make
sure that's all that is wrong with it).

USA market Civic's 1992 vintage do not have ABS.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Honda put ABS on the EX model when they introduced
the 5th-generation for '92.

Edmunds seems to agree -

I am embarrassed, and stand corrected.  Only the EX Sedan had ABS.

My 92 EX thinks it has ABS, since the ABS light is permanently on now,
since the dealer last worked on it. (yes i took it back, he said the
abs unit just conked out, not his fault, i said bye. i never liked the
way the abs worked on it, anyway).

on the 1992-1995 civics the ABS hydraulic fluid gets dirty and clogs some
part in the system which i'm not sure what that part is but i have heard if
you have the abs fluid changed it will start working again. my abs light is
on in my 1994 civic ex and i'm going to talk to my mechanic about changing
out the hydraulic fluid in the system to see if it straightens it out. it's
something to do with the way honda built the abs system in those years. i
wouldn't go replacing any computer that controls the ABS until you check
that out which can save you money.
