My 96 Civic DX Coupe 80K makes noise from up front in the engine
compartment when going 40-50mph and the gas is  l i g h t l y  pressed.

It sounds like something is loose / jangling.

The Honda Stealer says the entire tranny has to go...for many thousands
of bucks.

Two  Indies say the noise is just normal wear and tear and that since
mileage and performance have not suffered, its nothing to be worried
about.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

check for something loose/jangling - manifold/catalyst shrouds are a
favorite.

Is this a five speed, or an auto?

On the Acura five speed, clutch fingers would break or weaken, and rattle
around.  I think that caused no problem other than the noise.

Its an Auto.

No loss of power or control. Just a metal-on-metal "slithering" noise.

No one can figure this one out. I just hope the tranny just doest give
out all at once.
