Sometimes I get a mid frequency brake noise when braking. It's not a
high pitched squeal, it sounds like a french horn. Seems to happen
usually at very slow speeds, when I'm braking lightly. I don't think
it's rust on the pads, because this can happen even after I've been
driving for a while. Anyone know what the cause is?

Is the noise from the front or the rear?
How old are the pads/shoes?
When were the brakes last serviced?
Are the pads/shoes aftermarket?
What make, model, year and engine?

front (can't tell left/right though)

original everything. I'm at 80k miles. (yeah I'm a light braker, stop
laughing). I probably first heard the noise around 70k miles. I had
the car serviced at 70k, and the mechanic said there was ample pad
left.

Try some harder braking once in a while. Might just be a bit of rust
buildup.
