Hi

I have a 98 Honda Civic with 245,000 KM.

I am trying to figure out this problem.

My exhaust kind of smells stinky, kind of a mild smell of rotten eggs,
and also my bumper just above my exhaust is full of black oil
deposits.

I've been researching for answers and I think i have it narrowed down
to either; Oxygen sensor, Fuel pressure regulator, or a" charcoal
canister valve" which is under the chassis next to the gas tank.

I have had a check engine pop on about 2 months ago now.  Got it
scanned and  this code: P1457 Evap emissions code (Check Engine Light)
came up.  Which could just be from me overfilling my gas tank.

I want to mention that sometimes my idle is rough.  It happens about a
minute after driving and only lasts for about 10 seconds then goes
away until i start my car again.

Anyways please someone help me narrow this down, I know it can be more
than one thing.

But lets fix the smelly exhaust and burning of oil problem, I'm tired
of cleaning the oil stains off my rear bumper!

Thanks guys.

check the ignition system is in good condition - plugs, leads,
distributor cap & rotor.  replace all of them if old.

as for burnt oil, the sign to look for is the level on the dipstick
going down, not smuts on your bumper.

Just to clarify yes it is burning some oil... I've put on about 1500
km since last oil change and yesterday it was on the low point, I
should have checked sooner.    I will replace all that, it's in need
of replacement, along with some other things.  Thanks.

-------------------------

If it's actually burning the oil, it could be your PCV is shot and
allowing your oil vapor to be sucked out like crazy. Google it for how
to test. You seem to need a tune-up too. Is your CHECK ENGINE light
working presently? Are you using injector cleaner at least seasonally?
You should.

oil rarely makes it to the bumper, even if one (or more) of the
cylinder(s) has worn rings, oil will show up as blue smoke

what you saw in the bumper was soot from unburnt fuel.  you can be
sure that the valves and combustion chambers are pretty gunked up
now...

replace the gas cap first (use OEM) and see if that'll make a
difference

if its not the gas cap would it be the charcoal canister

definitely!! a good the gas cap means the finger is now poiting to the
charcoal canister, as the cause of the CEL, that is

Now a charcoal canister may get saturated as a result of an over-
filled gas tank, or engine flooding. And i am sure that a defective
charcoal canister is the result, not the cause of your problem, which
is excess fuel on the intake, most likely a flooded condition

If you can start and run in this condition then i guess your ignition
components are strong enough. O2 sensor may still be good, but i'm
thinking that the injectors may be leaking, causing the engine to be
flooded over night

thanks for the reply.

But if it flooded over night wouldn't it be hard to start in the
morning?  She has no trouble starting, she revs fine but on occasion
the cars idle drops and bounces and she almost stalls, but so far has
never stalled.

Also, I notice a smell from the exhaust but it i'snt like rotten
eggs ....it is a different stink.  And there's a black stain on my
bumper.

it's not likely that all four injectors are leaking at the same time,
unless the fuel pressure regulator goes amock

you can start a Honda I4 engines with 3 cylinders running, the one
that gets flooded will struggle back to life later on and causes rough
idle momentarily and paints your bumper black while doing so.. That's
my theory for this scenario

I'm thinking one cylinder is affected. To find out which one is
flooded, disconnect the plug wires one at a time and start the car,
similar to the method of finding out the fouled plug without having to
remove all.

Ok thank you ill try that out, I guess it wont hurt to do a
compression test while i'm at it.
