I've got a 2003 Honda Element with Real Time AWD, and am wondering if
the rear end gets engaged when making a tight turn. This thing has a
very tight turning circle and I'm concerned the difference in wheel
speed can cause the 4wd to engage? Am I off the wall thinking this?

That's called The Parking Lot Test, and it good to do it now and then.
If you hear grinding / shuddering, it's time to replace a litre of Dual
Pump Fluid. 30,000 miles is the average life span. Keep your tires well
rotated too or you'll be in AWD all the time. Not good.

Same as CR-V, same specs, same fluid:

I'm not getting any noise, the the fluid has been changed a couple of
months ago.
But, I was curious because I read somewheree that Honda
changed at some point a few years ago the differential rate at which
the rear would engage, and I was wondering whether it was changed to
activate sooner or with a longer delay and  Why they did it!

Thanks,

The newer ones cut in quicker when the front wheels spin, ie: My '00
CR-V might spin 3/4 of a turn before the rears start pushing. The new
one might only spin 1/2 turn. There's safety pressure valve and a high
temp valve that prevents damage in both the older and newer versions.
