89 Accord standard tranny "lurching" and hesitating

does that trailer have an hydraulic brake? if so, it could be that the
brake's piston damper is defective.

Were you in too high a gear?

If you have injection and you were using CRUISE CONTROL, you may have a
shot Throttle Position Sensor.

Sounds like your clutch is getting weak & can't handle the extra effort.

I concur with the clutch diagnosis. Try putting the car in gear and with the
emergency brake on slowly release the clutch. A well functioning clutch will
usually just stall out the engine. If the engine just winds up then the
clutch is bad. The trailer load made it show up faster that's all. It would
have failed under normal conditions soon anyway.

have either of you guys towed a braked trailer? unlikely being as most
don't have them. if the brake is faulty, lacking fluid, or undamped, as
the pintle slides back and forth, it gives exactly the symptoms
described. a faulty clutch will be present without the trailer - not
the case here.
