How common is complete auto trans failure at ~ 110K miles
given normal service and usage.  Any trends developing out
there?

It's common enough that Honda has issued TSB 04-036 for it. All '01-'03
Civics are affected, plus some '04's.

Honda has had major issues with its automatics in both their 4's and V6's
over the last seven years or so. While the V6 trannies eventually got a
warranty extension, it does not appear that Honda has yet granted the same
thing for the Civic automatics.

Maybe Honda should just give up making their own automatics and just buy
off-the-shelf Borg Warner units or something....
