*Clunking* Noise When Turning my Steering Weel

I've started noticing a *clunking* noise from the engine (or under the
steering wheel), when I turn the steering while to the right. Can anyone
think of a cause of this? More importantly, will it be covered in my
warranty?

Thanks,
  Lee

CV Joints?
Is your car under warranty?
Lee - 20 Jul 2004 16:04 GMT
Thanks for your reply. Yeah, my car is still under warranty - it's quite
new ('03 Civic with about 26miles). I don't much about cars, so I'll
look into the CVS joints issue. I assume this is covered under the warranty?

THanks for your help.

I just called the dealership, and he said that if it was the CV Joints
then it would cover under warranty unless it was caused due to something
like road debris. He told me that I could look under the car to see if
it was, but how would I be able to tell? What am I looking for?

He also said that if I was paying out of my own pocket it would be ~
$300. If I get a regular mechanic to have a look at it, would it cost
considerably less?

You are looking for signs of an impact in the vicinity of the boot - scrape
marks, dents, bent things, etc.  If it all looks pristine under there, they
will fix it.

Thanks - I'll speak to one of my friends who will probably know what a
boot looks like and see if he can help ;-)

Is there anything else that could have caused it e.g. driving around on
tires with little thread, driving on tires that need to be balanced/aligned?

The boot I am talking about is the a rubber bellows around the end of the
drive shaft just prior to its connection into the back of the wheel.

You could also jack up the wheel and check for excessive play.

You mentioned in another post that your car is under warranty. Take it to
the Honda dealer and have them take a look at it. If the mechanic
determines that you damaged it during an accident and as a result won't
repair it under warranty--tell them NOT to fix it. Take it to another
mechanic not employed by Honda and have him take a look at it. If he
determines that you were involved in an accident, pay him or another
mechanic to fix it. If he determines that you did not damage car--take it
back to Honda and show him the report and demand that they repair it under
the warranty.

I just wanted to follow up on my original post (hopefully, some of you
are still reading). I asked my friend to help me look at the car - we
could see the boot without lifting the car, and it didn't appear
damaged. He doesn't think the CV joints are the problem. He noticed that
the *clunk* doesn't always happen at the same position of the steering
wheel. Turning it really fast clockwise will make a lud click noise.
Turning it slowly will produced more of a clunk. If your turn it
anti-clockwise, and then back again, it will clunk at a different position.

I will be taking it to the mechanics ASAP, but if someone could give me
any more thoughts on what it could be, I'd appreciate it. I also noticed
that my steering wheel fluid was bubbling after about 15 mins of
driving, and when idle - is this normal?

Hate to reply to myself twice, but I was just speaking to a colleague
with a Honda CRE(?). He said he had the exact same problem. He told me
that he took it to the dealership, and they said it was the CV Joints
and that it would cost about $X to fix. He said it was under warranty.
They called him back to say that it was something else, and that it
wasn't covered by warranty.

This seems like too much of a coincidence too not be a command problem.
Is there any other reason for whatever repair is neccessary will not be
covered by warranty?

Hope someone is still reading this!

Thanks guys,
  Lee

Did you check if the lugnuts are tight?

If I remember back a few posts, you said this car is under warranty. Take it
to the dealer.

I assume when you say the steering wheel fluid was bubbling, you mean what
you see watching the see-through power steering reservoir when the engine is
running.  If so, this is normal circulation and nothing to worry about.  If
you mean its boiling in there after you turn off the motor, that is not
normal and would be a warranted issue - take it to the dealer.

For the record, it seems that I need a Power Steering Rack.

After 27k miles (and rotation every oil change), I need 4 new tires and
a new power steering rack. Didn't see that coming...

Is that 27k from new, or since you bought the car used?
