Arctic Wolf - 21 Jul 2004 17:47 GMT I have a Civic LX, and the maintenance light blinked upon ignition, so I got my oil changed yesterday, but the maintenance light still blinks upon ignition. Can I reset the lights myself, or do I need to return to the oil change place?
Brian Smith - 21 Jul 2004 18:06 GMT > I have a Civic LX, and the maintenance light blinked upon ignition, so I got > my oil changed yesterday, but the maintenance light still blinks upon > ignition. If you hold the trip odometer reset button, then turn the ignition key to the run position, keep the reset button depressed for about ten seconds after turning the key. The maintenance reminder light should shut itself off.

Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day, teach that person to use the internet and they won't bother you for weeks.
Woody - 22 Jul 2004 00:03 GMT It just shows Brian read his Owners manual. Don't the rest of you wish you could read.....

Can I reset the lights myself, or do I need to return to the oil : change place? Did you read the user's manual when you got the car? or you are just one of those idiots who thinks don't have to, and then here you are asking stupid questions?

I really doubt you can call me or anyone else "stupid". Only a truely ignorant person would feel right to call another "stupid" without all the necessary info. Trust me when I say this, I'm far more accomplished than you, in terms of both career and academic achievement.

Logic doesn't seem to apply here...
And I was only implying that he is smart enough to read the manual that came with the car which implies you are not...

The term "stupid" may actually apply to you. I may have mistyped and added an extra "h" in wash, but that certainly doesn't imply in any way that I can't spell the word wash. You're very immature. I'm shocked at the level at which you wish to discuss this issue. Have fun with yourself, but I think I'm done here. My car's maintenance light's gone, so I'm done here.

Next time don't bother us with questions that could be answered quickly by reading your owner's manual. If you didn't get a manual with your car, call the dealer.

Dave Kelsen - 21 Jul 2004 22:34 GMT On 7/21/2004 2:09 PM Arctic Wolf spake these words of knowledge:
>> > > > > : I have a Civic LX, and the maintenance light blinked upon >> ignition, [quoted text clipped - 43 lines] > reading the owner's manual. > Hmmm,... Logic is not your forte, is it? AC, your claim re education and career are being edged out by your additional responses. An intelligent and well-educated person would not make the simple misspellings you have made - or at least would not submit these kinds of ripostes without using a spellchecker.
FWIW, I myself have been known to expound with verbal diatribes at people for no better reason than frustration (the likely cause of Bob's original response) - and I am in fact highly educated, both in the walkways of life and the halls of 'higher' education. Your deduction is based on a lack of information, which never justifies a conclusion.
A more reasoned response to your question might have been appropriate, but so would the simple phrase "Read The f.cking Manual".

His response is that he's not sure, but he is pretty sure that an educated person would read the owner's manual that comes with the car.
It's amazing how many people throw away or otherwise never bother to read the owner's manual that comes with their shiny multi-thousand dollar toy.
Seth - 22 Jul 2004 04:19 GMT > > > I'm not sure. This whole thread makes me chuckle... Especially considering I may be the least educated of the bunch (a fact I'm quite proud of considering how I've done in life thus far).
Elmo P. Shagnasty - 22 Jul 2004 03:42 GMT > Deductive reasoning. > Would someone who's intelligent and educated waste time posting insulting > comments that have no productive value? Would someone who's intelligent and educated go to a newsgroup to find out how to turn off a flashing maintenance light on his car? Or would he go to the owner's manual?
You tell us.
(But we already know the answer.)

If the highlight of your day is calling someone "stupid" in a newsgroup with as limited info as this gives, you can't be all that intelligent or educated. Someone who's cultured and refined wouldn't find it appropriate to insult someone for an innocent question. Your actions well describe your position. I can't believe you're even trying to recover dignity and pride after make such a fool of yourself with an immature comment.

And you don't hesitate to tell us all how grand you are, something we can only surmise the truth of, in the face of absolute proof that you didn't even bother to read your owner's manual.
Absolute proof in the hand is worth more than two claims of superiority in the bush.
You can say whatever you want, you can make whatever claims you want about your accomplishments, but remember: on the internet, no one knows you're a dog.

Everybody is jumping on Bob here for calling the guy an idiot, but I have to agree with him.
When my maintenance light came on, I looked in the manual and knew in 2 minutes I didn't have a problem because the light comes on at certain mileage points regardless of whether you did any maintenence or not.
Then another 20 seconds to reset and turn the light off.
Arctic Wolf is not the first guy to post a question here that could be answered in a few minutes by looking in the manual and he won't be the last, and it doesn't matter what he does for a living or what kind of person he is, or what kind of education he's had.
The answer was obvious if the idiot had looked in the manual.
HNewbie - 22 Jul 2004 20:35 GMT a simple question about the maintenance light turned into a big argument about one's education and achievement. Yes, I agree that one should make an attempt to find the answers to such questions by going through the manual first but there are many who will not bother to go through the manual or may be lazy to read it.....and they will keep posting simple questions like this one............and so best thing to do for such cases is not to reply if you feel that it is too simple and easy to find out from the manual........ as for the newbies (like me), Yes reading the manual is a must .... always start with the manual for any question you have.... chances are most of the questions will be answered then and there itself. if you there are several similar kind of postings on this newsgroup, go through them...you will definitely find some pointer to your question
Just my humble opinion.

If one knows about the newsgroups enough to post the question here, netiquette demands even a cursory search of said group before posting the question.
And since the question comes up twice a week, even a cursory search would have found it.
Ergo, he didn't search. He didn't look in his owner's manual. He just came here expecting to be spoon-fed.
It's like someone asking, "How do I bold something in Microsoft Word?" Now, if said person goes on to say, "I've hit the B button, I've gone to the character format dialog box, and everything's set--but it's not bolding," that's a different question. That's more of a "why doesn't the bold command work?" which would be a legitimate question, because that wouldn't be covered in the owner's manual--it would be a bug issue, and of course that's why the community is here, to share such information that isn't in the documentation. But "I've never done this before, can someone tell me how?" is asking to be spoon-fed. And that's not what the world is about, not when it's in the documentation or available in a very cursory search.
Elmo P. Shagnasty - 22 Jul 2004 22:00 GMT > but there are many who will not > bother to go through the manual or may be lazy to read it.....and they will > keep posting simple questions like this one............and so best thing to > do for such cases is not to reply if you feel that it is too simple and easy > to find out from the manual........ no, not at all.
It's like bad service in a restaurant. You never leave a zero tip; that doesn't get the message across. You leave a nickel. THAT gets the message across.
Silence doesn't tell these people that we know they're idiots.
