Problem with 96 civic si

Hi, I just found this newsgroup and was wondering if someone has any expert
opinions.

I have a 96 civic si (canadian) (US is ex) 127 hp sohc vtec with 162k km
(~100k miles) standard trans,
When pressing harder on gas pedal during acceleration it feels like it
hesitates a bit (like bicycle chain slipping or tires not gripping on snow).
That is mostly in low rpms <3000 ( high rpms too, but not as much) and when
I let go of the pedal a bit the acceleration kicks in again.
Anyone have any opinions or thoughts before I take it in to a mechanic?
Thanks all

That's what I was thinking too. If the engine revs up but the car does
not accelerate it sounds like the clutch is slipping. If  the engine
does not rev up, then it could be something else...

Change your plug leads.

The engine does not rev up. the rpms stay the same while it's slipping.

If the engine revs stay constant even though you're accelerating, it's
not the clutch slipping. However, I'm not sure what could be the problem.

Maybe Stuart could explain why the leads must be changed? I'm not
questioning the advice, but I'm curious why are they the problem.

Thanks everyone who replied.
I went and changed the spark plug wires today and now it's perfect. Drives
like new.
Thanks again everyone
