Transmission Q: D3 vs. D4

Hi all, 2000 V6 Accord sedan with no manual here; so what is D3 used for
as opposed to D4?

D3 is holds the tranny in third gear. D4 allows the use of overdrive.

Jeff,

I use D3 when I don't want the tranny to shift up, like when climbing a
long hill in the city, or when descending the same hill. Also provides
some engine braking when on bad ice, almost like driving with a manual
transmission.

Use D3 and D2 when snow and ice make it driving up and down hills in the
winter an iffy propersiton.
