What could cause this? Also, my hand brake light stays dimly lit for quite a
bit while driving and goes out after a while.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I had the brake light on all the time cause the brake fluid was leaking.  I
checked the brake fluid cylinder and the level was falling below the minimum
level few hours after I fill it up. After proper inspection, I found that
the leak was not in the cylinder but probably the hose. The mechanic
confirmed it and changed it. Since then its been working fine.

Probably, you are having the same problem.
