I have a 98 Civic DX, automatic and recently I have been noticing what
appears to be strange shifting. For instance, when I roll up to an
intersection and the light turns green before I stop or when I make a slow
speed turn (into a driveway for instance) and then get back on the gas, the
transmission shifts down with a bit of a clunk (nothing too loud, just
abrupt/rough). Also, when coming off the highway onto a ramp (and on the
brakes) the car seems to be abrupt/rough when it downshifts (from 4th to
3rd).
Does this sound like a fatal transmission problem or might it be an issue as
simple as new honda tranny fluid? Any suggestions? Thank you for your
assistance.

Knowing your mileage would be a big help, and you didn't say when you
last changed your ATF, but it sounds pretty normal behaviour for a Honda.
Change the Z1 tranny fluid twice, and keep going.

if you had a manual, it would be easy to say it was the clutch. As
Curly said, Change the Z1 tranny fluid twice.

OK. I'll change the fluid then. By the way, the car has approx 140,000kms.
Thanks for your help everyone.
