I've always used Dexron II and Dexron III AT fluid (like the factory manual calls for) in my '88 Accord and I've never had any shifting problems to speak of....even after 239,000 miles. I'm seriously thinking about using the Dual Pump fluid the next time since it has additional lubricants compared to Dexron III. I can't imagine it causing problems but I just wanted to make sure beforehand. If you are refering to the Honda branded transmission fluid, I changed from Dextron ll at 95,000 mi. I have a 90 Accord. That was a week ago and it seems to shift more smoothly. I had to change shops and they put it in with out even asking. They said Honda recomended it. I should clarify. I hadn't had any shifting problems during the first 239,000 miles( which I passed around a month ago) but I've lost power twice in the last three weeks and it has me concerned. If I move the shifter around it eventually comes out of it and I'm good to go. You need Z1 ATF. Not sure why you used Dexron, But you'll find a big difference when you drain-n-fill your '88 Twice, or more, with Z1. It's the correct fluid for the job. You'll find a big difference when you drain-n-fill your '88 twice, or more, with Honda Z1. It's the correct fluid for the job. It might even fix your problems, but I expect you've reamed out the friction surfaces because Dexron doesn't have the friction modifiers that a Honda tranny needs. I was getting the two mixed up since I also have a '98 CRV. Like I said, the Honda Factory Service manual recommended Dexron at the time without any mention of a Honda fluid. I'm looking at it right now in my '88 Accord Service manual. It's right there in the maintenance section on page 4- 4 and also on page 15-16 in the Auto Trans section.
