How do I acces the cabin filter (for the AC/heat vents) on a '92 Civic LX? The cabin filter is something that appeared with the advent of R-134a. Soon after the changeover from R-12 reports started coming in of evaporator perforation - and the problem was appearing in many makes and models. I think 134a mandated a change in evaporator alloy; evaporator leaks were uncommon before the changeover. In any event, by 1995 it was determined the problem was that dust and pollen were clinging to the condensed water on the evaporator and corroding the metal. Cabin filters were used to reduce or prevent the buildup of the corrosive mud. Now some models leave the heater fan on for a while after the A/C is turned off to dry the evaporator, but cabin filters are nearly universal. I know Volvo offers a retrofit kit for a filter in their 850 model, which was their flagship for those years. Whether Honda has such a kit for the '92 Civic is a good question. It really isn't necessary for the machine but the man may want it. Considering how they must use the AC a lot, how does it make sense for Honda to not provide a filter 'slot'? Weird.
