This f.cking idiot almost hit me today when she totally wasn't paying
any attention and changed into my lane just as I was driving past
her. I honked at her, but gotta say that my horn volume didn't seem
all that loud. How much would it cost to get a louder horn, and is
that even legal in the US?

Try something like this:
http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?MfrCode=WLO&MfrPartNumber=403&Cat
egoryCode=3074
Should be perfectly legal unless you're leaning on it all the time
violating local noise bylaws.

Do check your local laws first, at first glance, I believe many of their
products would be illegal for use on public roads in many jurisdictions.

Trains use them on public roads every day, so it must be legal. :)

Truck drivers always seem to have a tire iron or hammer handy for such
situations. Honda generally keeps the tire iron will stowed. I'll bet
that has prevented a few nasty beatings :-)

You could certainly get a louder horn, and it might even be legal,
but in the long run you're better off using your reaction time the
way you did, to get out of the way of idiots, rather than blowing
your horn and hoping that they do the right thing in response.

I agree. Bad drivers are bad drivers, and with a louder horn, there's
a greater chance that they might respond to it, but I wouldn't count
on it.

A loud horn could easily backfire. If you blow your train horn at some
MFFY and it startles him, he might get pissed off and decide to
actively block you.

Good point, plus a point near & dear to me, you might be in a
residential area and the loud horn could wake up someone's baby, an
elderly person, someone who works nights, etc., something I wish the
bozos around here would remember once in a while (I live near a busy
intersection and some drivers just lean on their horns during morning &
evening rush hours). Oooo, what I'd give for a handy tire iron
sometimes! ;)

A lawyer once told me to always honk your horn if you're about to be in
an accident, since the testimony of bystanders would indicate you were
awake, but other driver was (clearly) oblivious, so I do !

Go to the wreckers and take the horns off a big American car.
You'll need a relay as well, so as not to overload the switch.

It's just a matter of getting a SECOND horn and wiring it in parallel
with the existing horn. Just make sure you don't go over the rating
for that circuit. I doubt it would even be close.

Just drive down to your local electronics store and buy yourself a
"ghetto blaster" stereo, and you'll be all set! Remember to EQ the
signal so that there is nothing but bass and treble; that pesky
midrange doesn't do much to get the attention of other drivers.

Depends on how loud you want to be. Most states do have limits on horn
volume, but many cars are well below the legal limit, so there's a good
chance you can get a louder horn without breaking any laws.

I got one from a Volvo to replace one in my Toyota.
Works well. Switched it to the next one, too, IIRC
I would suggest that you put a handy switch in the wire to the
replacement / addition, in case you want to give a quiet "beep" with
the weak one in a non-emergency.

It'd actually be nice if vehicles had a wider choice of sounds, just as
they now have different levels of lights (parking, DRL, low beam, high
beam, fog lights).
A bell sound would be more appropriate for waking up someone that
doesn't go when the light turns green, while the loud air horn would be
appropriate when someone runs the red light in front of you. I usually
give a long blast to drivers that engage in serial red light runnning,
(usually after a left turn arrow has long since ended).

For me, all I need to do is have my car's horn make a loud enough sound
to get attention, but not be obnoxious. I just went to Pep Boys and had
them swap out the factory installed horn with a louder one. I think the
who think, including parts and labor was < $50 and only took a few
minutes of a mechanic's time.
I do like the idea of having a horn where you can set an option for how
loud it is and the kind of sound it emits.

I dunno, I'd think a really loud horn would be more likely to startle an
oblivious driver into doing something dangerously stupid, like swerving out
of control. It might also startle other drivers around you who aren't
currently doing anything stupid. It can be really hard to tell who's
honking at who sometimes.
I have to admit, there'd be a certain visceral satisfaction in blasting
some idiot with 130 decibels of obnoxious sound. Not sure how useful it
would actually be, though...

Sure you can. It won't stop such stuff though and might even make some
idjit lose control and hit someone most likely you. Some of the rigs can
literally scare you to death.
Just keep an eye out for everyone else. The roads are getting so crowded
I hate to go near town. Everyone is talking on a dad blamed cellphone or
even reading a book like I saw a few days ago. Give them a minute's
inattention and they could kill us.

You didn't say which car you drive, but odds are, an auto parts store
could put in a more authoritative horn for under $100. Just shop around
at auto parts shops in your area. You may even be able to do the work

Air horns are widely available and are inexpensive.
See "http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=40135"
Try to get at least 130dB. Ensure that you use a relay (hook the
existing horn wires to the relay coil).

Some Hondas have two horns already. All we know about yours is your
probable location (USA). You can probably add a second horn if one of
yours is dead, but bumper removal is needed on most models (unknown).
