Traded in 2000 Elantra and bought a new 2005 Elantra. Larger tire size
is better in new one. The 02 trans., had drive, 1, 2, reverse. 05 has
drive 1,2,3,reverse. They said the transmission has been upgraded
since 02. Any input?

It's a completely different transmission. In fact, it's the same
transmission (less trivial differences such as final drive ratio) as the
1999 and newer Sonatas. It seems to experience far fewer problems than
the older transmission, of which I have a relatively low opinion.

I have a 2003 Elantra with 20K on it and it is smooth!
But I think Hyundaitech will agree with me that it is
important to flush the tranny at the recommended intervals
in my case 30K miles.

I'd recommend a flush or drain and fill every 30k. Most of the trannies
I've seen have rather ugly looking fluid by then.
