I just scheduled the replacement of both of the front drive axles on my
2002 Hyundai Accent with 193,000 miles on the clock.

The reason for my post is that I wanna' check with you guys to verify
that $1,400 is a reasonable and acceptable price to pay the dealer for
this sorta' work.  Seems kinda' pricey to me.

Oh yeah. If geography is a factor, this will be in central California.

What do ya think?  Should I keep my appointment or should I find another
repair facility?

Depends upon what part of central CA.  Fresno?  I've used Cabral's Auto
(recommended to me) for the same thing on a Camry and he was far cheaper
then the dealer and $200 cheaper than my regular wrench.  He's now my
regular wrench.  I've been a happy customer and it may be worth a call
for you.

Mike, the dealer charge is never reasonable.  Find yourself a god reliable
independent mechanic and save a bundle of money.

I took our company pickup truck to the dealer for an oil change.  They sent
us a coupon for $29.95 for the change.  That is reasonable.  The price
without the coupon though, is $55.  The good part of the deal is that they
have a nice little lunch counter and give customers free coffee, muffins,
finger sandwiches, etc.  They also have a bunch of Roush Mustangs too with
very good internet deals.

In the showroom they sticker for $48,000.

Rock Auto lists the axles for around $70.00 times two, right and left.

The labor guide I checked listed the time as 3 hours for both sides.

Figure it out from there.

I guess that's not too bad a price for a part that sells for somewhere
around $75, and shouldn't take more than an hour or so per side, including
beer break.  That would pretty nicely cover profit and overhead, I should
think.
