how can an EGR valve be cleaned? it comes off easy on between intake and exhaust
manifold and the intake side port is full of soft oily sludge but I suspect the port
should not be sprayed with any chemical as that would move inside the intake

is there any way to determine if EGR is stuck open and if it is, how can it be closed?

take off the 2 bolts and the exhaust side bolt and slide it out carefully avoiding
damage to the gasket
spray inside the intake and exhaust sides some liquid wrench, let it soak and repeat a
couple times

don't spray the valve on top where the vacuum line connects

you can use a small brush to carefully scrape the channel between egr and intake
manifold but don't spray inside
